For 10 years, I sprinted up the corporate career ladder. Internally, I was driven by the relentless competition for achievement and titles, chasing higher and higher compensation.

By the time I decided to stop, my base salary was $165k as Director of FP&A and Cost Accounting. But, unfortunately, *surprise surprise* the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. By the time I was director, I was disenchanted, frustrated, and felt like my time and energy were being wasted.

So, as some folks know, I focused on growing my current business and purchased a second. Based on what I’ve experienced and what I’ve witnessed from others pursuing this path, there is a lot worth sharing, which is often not considered as a mainstream career path. In this article, I’ll share some more details about what the reality of these two career paths looks and feels like.

Ownership

In the corporate world, bosses encourage employees to take “ownership” of their work. Unfortunately, this is a ruse decided to force motivation. Without truly owning anything, people won’t care like they do for long.
