Here’s Why You Don’t Get Anything Done

Managing Time

“If you say yes to everything, nothing will get done.”
-Unknown

Without having a system or methodology to organize and complete our work, we often fall victim to inaction or, worse, busyness- which is where we spend a lot of time doing something, but nothing gets accomplished.

Most people begin their workday with at least eight hours available from start to finish. But when we look back before heading home, we cannot explain what got accomplished or where the time went. The problem is not that we are lazy or malicious with the use of our time. Instead, we easily fall victim to the fact that if we don’t have a mindful system or consistent discipline in place, that time will begin to disappear into the void. A meeting here, a quick conversation there, emails, and then it’s time to go home again- another day lost. To improve organizational efficacy in strategy-execution, all people must exhibit ownership over their time, priorities, and output.

The primary questions we should ask ourselves are:

1) How should we approach our work and priorities to maximize efficiency and effectiveness?
2) How do we create a large block of uninterrupted time in which we can focus intensely?

The key to effectively using your time at work is to understand where the time goes, understand what could change to reduce time spent on non-value-added activities, and build discipline to your routine…
