I came across a very interesting story yesterday that stuck with me overnight.

Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to His Son, by George Horace Lorimer is the story of a businessman father sharing advice on life to his son through college and the early part of his career in the family business.

Below I have some of the most valuable quotes and then a short story below.

You can find the free ebook here (it’s in the public domain since it was published in 1902.)

Enjoy!

Education’s about the only thing lying around loose in this world, and that it’s about the only thing a fellow can have as much of as he’s willing to haul away.

The first thing that any education ought to give a man is character, and the second thing is education.

Yet the man who hasn’t licked stamps isn’t fit to write letters.

A clear mind is one that is swept clean of business at six o’clock every night and isn’t opened up for it again until after the shutters are taken down next morning.

The swamps are full of razor-backs like Charlie, fellows who’d rather make a million a night in their heads than five…
